This is a heater matrix water deflector panel for the Golf and Jetta MK2.
These cars had a tendency for the heater matrix to explode back in the 80s and 90s.Volkswagen recalled all MK2 models and fitted a modified heater matrix and cooling pipes, they also fitted these panels to the side of the matrix so that if it did fail, then the drivers legs weren't blasted with scalding hot, pressurised water.
This is for right hand drive cars only and is not fitted to all models.
